Writing a will:

Can you give me some advice on writing a will?

Writing a will can be complex and it is very important to word it correctly. Even though someone may not consider that they have a lot of possessions it is still important to make a will to make sure that their wishes are met. A person can draw up their own will and there are pre-printed forms available for this.

Do you need a solicitor to write a will?

There isn’t a legal requirement that a will is either drawn up or witnessed by a solicitor. But even if the will is really straight forward it may be advisable to have a solicitor to check it over to make sure that it is in order and to make sure that it will not effect the persons wishes.

How much does a solicitor cost?

Charges vary between solicitors and will also depend on the complexity of the will.

What sort of things should be included in the will?

The person making the will needs to consider how much money they have, what property and possessions they have and who they want them to go to. They should make a list of those people, who would be beneficiaries of the will and then decide how much or what proportion, they want to leave to each person.  If there are children, they should make future arrangements for their care. They also need to decide who will sort out the estate and carry out their wishes, and that person would be known as the Executor of the will.
