Domestic Violence
I am in a violent relationship that I would like to leave and I need somewhere to stay, what can I do?
If you are male or female and are suffering from domestic violence we would recommend that you come in to see us so that we can advise you as fully as possible and give you the information you require. We could also refer you to local groups and services you will also be able to help you. Don't forget, that our service is strictly confidential and that we will deal with the problem sensitively and professionally.
If it is not safe to stay at home, you could consider staying with relatives or friends, if you are a woman you could stay at a woman's refuge (with or without children), get emergency accommodation from the local authority under homeless persons legislation or find privately rented accommodation.
Can you explain how a woman's refuge works?
They are safe houses run by and for women suffering from domestic violence. They can give you a lot of emotional and practical support, for example advice on benefit claims, which solicitors to use and if necessary, how to contact the police. To find your nearest refuge you should contact the Women's Aid Help line, their telephone and other organisations who may be able to help are at the bottom of this page. Help line staff will do their best to find you somewhere safe to stay the night even if the local refuge is full. They will also be happy to answer any questions you have about refuges.
Can the council do anything for me?
If it is not reasonable for you to be expected to occupy your home because of risk or fear of violence you will be classed as legally homeless. If you are a victim of domestic violence, your application will be dealt with sympathetically. You may need to attend an interview, but you do not have to go there on your own, you can take someone with you as support if you wish. The local authority may also have a duty to provide temporary accommodation for you while they consider if you are legally homeless.
What about rented accommodation?
If you can plan when you are going to leave then you might consider private rented accommodation. It may also be possible to claim housing benefit if you have a low income. For more information on housing benefit, see the frequently asked questions on housing.
